This year we are featuring several plants. The first is Opuntia Polyacantha with a lavender flower. We have been striving for an Opuntia Polyacantha with lavender flowers for years. It has many long spines which enhances the plant.

Another plant that we are featuring is O. Polyacantha from the badlands of South Dakota. It has yellow flowers with a large red center. We love flowers that are bicolored. The plant is featured at the top right of this page.

This year we are  again featuring Opuntia Polyacantha “Purple Desert” which was a huge success last year. If there is one opuntia (prickly pear) that you should have in your garden this is the one. The new growth is dark green with black spines and with the advent of fall the new growth turns purple and stays that way throughout its life cycle.  The purple pads are spectacular and best of all the flowers are rose to pink in color.

We recommend the purchase of the 3rd edition of John Spain’s book “GROWING WINTER HARDY CACTUS IN COLD/WET CLIMATES.” We highly recommend this book to both the novice and experienced cactus grower. He lists 25 of his favorite cactus and he has many color photographs of winter hardy cactus. He shows you the fundamentals of preparing a cactus garden. This book is a must for all who grow these plants. The cost is $19.95  which includes postage.
